How to Apply the 'Unexpected Red Theory' in Life

Are you familiar with the ‘Unexpected Red Theory’? The phrase was coined by Brooklyn-based designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon in a TikTok video in January 2024 and has been trending ever since. The idea is that by adding anything red, big or small, to a room where it doesn't match at all instantly improves the look of any space, especially in places where it shouldn’t necessarily make sense.

Of course, if you know anything about me, you’ll know I’m all about pops of red! Actually my red branding originally came about because I always wore red lipstick no matter what colour clothing I was wearing (at the time usually black!) It’s one of the things that I became known for and eventually it led to me creating The RED Effect™.

The RED Effect™ is all about choice, in particular choosing to be the best version of you; bringing that pop of red sparkle to whatever you’re doing, leaning into your strengths and expressing yourself authentically.

So having recently heard about the Unexpected Red Theory, it got me thinking about how we could apply it not just in homewares and fashion, but also in our personal and professional lives to bring some 'unexpected red' to our days.

Here are some ideas to consider:

❤️ Next time you’re out and about, purposefully take a wrong turn and enjoy exploring somewhere new
❤️ Explore new forms of self expression by experimenting with different hobbies or creative pursuits
❤️ Inject some passion and excitement into your relationships by planning fun adventures or surprising people with thoughtful gestures
❤️ Step outside your comfort zone by pursuing new skills or experiences, or try being more vulnerable in your conversations
❤️ Be more daring in your decision making and consider pursuing more unconventional opportunities
❤️ Bring extra passion, energy and enthusiasm to your presentations and interactions with others

You don’t have to go all out - it’s about adding some small, intentional ‘unexpected red’ that can potentially make something mundane more exciting, fun and memorable.

So what could you do today to add some ‘unexpected red’?
